Original Etteilla Tarot - Le Jeu de Toth
About
The Original Etteilla Tarot - Le Jeu de Toth is a Divination Tarot deck created by the occultist Etteilla (Jean-Baptiste Alliette), the first professional tarot reader, in France around 1791. The deck’s illustrations were created by the famous engraver Pierre-François Basan. This deck is historically important as it is the first to use “Madness” and the number 0 for the Fool Arcana card. It is also the first divination tarot deck to use astrological correspondences on the Major Arcana cards. Etteilla named this deck ‘Le jeu de Thoth’ and traced its origin to ancient Egypt and the temple of Memphis.
This version is believed to be the first edition as it has all the typographical errors of the first printing, including some words not properly oriented for reading upside-down and astrological signs on only one side. It is not a later re-print such as the Pussey edition as it doesn’t have a tax stamp, which were introduced in France around 1813. Additionally, it is not the deluxe version that is rumored to exist. Our deck is complete and in very good condition but doesn’t have its box or manual.
